ABEC CALIBRATING VS. SKATE RATED CALIBRATING
Skate Rated calibration is based on a specific mechanical adjustment designed to withstand the forces involved in skating.
1. Radial Clearance:
In the industry (ABEC), the goal is to have no space between the balls and races to avoid vibrations. For skates, this is a mistake.
Calibration: The space between the balls and the races of the wheels is taken into account.
Skate Rated calibration intentionally leaves a clearance. This prevents the bearing from seizing up when a little dirt gets in or when heat expands the metals during intense outdoor training.
2. Lateral Load Capacity:
The ABEC standard assumes that the force is always frontal (like a fan). A skater exerts brutal lateral forces when turning.
Calibration: The bearing raceways have deeper grooves to prevent the balls from slipping off the axle or "biting" the metal when subjected to lateral pressure.
3. Groove Depth
Calibration: While an ABEC 9 bearing has narrow grooves, a bearing calibrated for skateboarding deepens and widens the ball grooves to increase structural stability against impacts (falls, jumps, and tricks).

3. Competition: Calibration focused on minimal friction, with mirror-polished balls and ceramic-coated chrome, “CERAMIC”.
